Dr. Lewis has a special interest in a variety of pediatric gastrointestinal disorders and is the director of clinical research for CCDHC. He has participated in research with children in a wide variety of illnesses. His projects have examined treatment of celiac disease, Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis as well as Hepatitis B, acid reflux, and even autism. He currently is conducting research on eosinophilic esophagitis, celiac disease and is one of our investigators on using the video capsule “pill-cam” to study Crohn’s disease. He is one of only 5 pediatric gastroenterologists in Atlanta trained in interpreting the pill-cam videos. In the past, he has received private and National Institutes of Health funding for his research work and has presented his at national conferences and published in high quality medical journals. He is a founding member of the only chapter of R.O.C.K. - Raising Our Celiac Kids, in Georgia. This is a local chapter of a national support group for families affected by celiac disease, an immunologic intolerance to wheat. After four years, there are over 150 families in the Georgia ROCK chapter and it is growing all the time. Most of the kids in the ROCK group were diagnosed with celiac disease by the CCDHC physicians. To learn more, send an email to celiacgroup@ccdhc.org In May 2008, Dr. Lewis and parents in the ROCK group organized a 3-day family camp for over a hundred people at Camp Twin Lakes. The camp, Camp WeeKanEatit!! has now been extended to include a kids-only summer camp scheduled next for May 28, 2011. Annual family camps have continued and have been a lot of fun. Dr. Lewis attends our satellite clinics in Gainesville and Lawrenceville. He is a fellow of The American Academy of Pediatrics and has served on several committees. Dr. Lewis has also served on a number of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Committees and is very active in the community as an advocate for children's health. He has been the chief of gastroenterology for Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite (2004-2010). He is an active member of the North American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition and is board certified in pediatrics and gastroenterology. When he's not hard at work for his patients or research, he likes to spend time with his wife and 2 children, play tennis or try to catch up on his sleep!
